Breeders showcase their best poinsettias during the Poinsettia Trials

"If I cut my finger, poinsettia sap comes out," jokes poinsettia specialist Wout Vollebregt from Florensis, drawing laughter from the crowd. It perfectly captures the friendly atmosphere inside the greenhouse of The Mastergrowers, where countless poinsettias in all colors are on display.

On October 30 and 31, the Poinsettia Trials took place in Honselersdijk, organized by Beekenkamp, Dümmen Orange, Florensis, and Lazzeri. The breeders presented both their latest introductions and their well-loved classics.

At Beekenkamp, new trial numbers from a mix series stood out in striking pink shades. Jari and Babette also showcased the Luna, notable for its V-shaped growth and vivid red color. Since this poinsettia grows tall, more plants can fit per square meter — a benefit for both growers and retailers. They also demonstrated creative ways to present poinsettias as gift plants with attractive packaging.

Andrea Lazzeri was pleased with the Trials: "It's a great opportunity for Dutch growers to visit. They give us feedback and can look at varieties for the future." At Lazzeri, Superba Galaxy took center stage — a variety Andrea is particularly proud of. He also highlighted Papagena, which he says has been a success and is ideal for smaller pot sizes.

Poinsettia specialist Wout Vollebregt also had plenty of beautiful varieties to show at the Trials. While poinsettias are not a major part of the Florensis assortment, they are still an important crop. Among his highlights were Mirage Red and Gloriette Brilliant Red — two standout red poinsettias. Another favorite of Wout's is the Limoncello, a unique green-yellow poinsettia.

At Dümmen Orange, several highlights were showcased, including Moni and Noblesse. "Noblesse is going to be one of the top varieties," the Dümmen team said in unison. It has an excellent bract display and strong, uniform growth. Moni is currently the whitest poinsettia in Dümmen Orange's assortment. The j'Adore series also caught attention on the display tables, featuring a wide range of pink tones — from vibrant fuchsia to soft pastel shades.
