Photo Report: Trade Fair Aalsmeer 2025

While people were visiting IFTF last week, all sorts of things happened in Aalsmeer as well. Open houses, both at the auction and beyond, evening parties, plenty of awards handed out, and many new introductions. From plant pots with an air chamber and striking product packaging to lisianthus, gerberas, roses, and autumnal tagetes. One thing is clear: the sector is still full of energy and needs each other to grow stronger together. Some exhibitors were present for the first time in a long while, others for the very first time ever, and still others decided to view the fair from the other side this year and wandered through the aisles.

Indian flower growers hit hard by rise of artificial flowers

The increasing popularity of artificial and plastic flowers is taking a serious toll on India's fresh flower industry, says Abinesh Subramani of Saraswathi Flowers Ooty. "The increasing use of artificial and plastic flowers has reduced the demand for real flowers by almost 50% across India," he explains. "These synthetic products are replacing natural flowers in weddings, temples, functions, and all decorative events, severely affecting the income and stability of Indian flower growers."

"Because we sell our cuttings worldwide, the contact with different cultures has been very enriching"

After forty years of active involvement in Dracaena cultivation, Dracaena nursery De Plaats has announced that it will end its operations at the end of 2026. Both the greenhouses and the company residence have been sold, marking the beginning of a new chapter for owners Ruud and Agnes Scheffers. Dragontree "De Plaats" will be officially dissolved at the end of 2026.

"The resilience of this industry gives us confidence for the future"

The last five years have been a true test for the global horticulture industry, says Torben Pedersen, CEO and Co-Founder of Greenex International. "We rode the rollercoaster from the pandemic sales boom and supply chain crisis to the market rebalancing itself post-COVID, and the recent shock of tariff threats in early 2025 that put uncertainty into many people's minds."

China: Ensuring quality through packaging innovation

Preserving the delicate beauty of fresh-cut roses post-harvest is a high-stakes challenge, and traditional corrugated packaging struggles to optimally meet the industry's evolving needs. For a long time, the industry has widely adopted traditional packaging using corrugated paper and dividers. However, this method presents several challenges: difficulties in recycling management, susceptibility to moisture on rainy days, vulnerability to damage, and a tendency to harbor bacteria. Could the fresh-cut flower industry draw inspiration from the transparent plastic packaging commonly used for berries to drive change? After five years of dedicated work in the fresh-cut flower sector, Deng Haowen has provided his solution—the "Air Pack" fresh-cut rose packaging box.
