The 10th edition of Flower Expo Ukraine was held at the International Exhibition Center in Kiev, Ukraine.

"Ronald Olsthoorn of Arcadia Chrysanten and John Elstgeest of Deliflor. At the show, their new chrysanthemum variety, called the Magnum, takes center stage at the Deliflor booth. "It's only been on the market for three weeks now, and at the exhibition it is attracting the attention of many visitors", says Elsgeest. The variety's grower, Olsthoor, is also pleased with the appearance and growing habits of the flower. "Weekly, we produce 2,500 of these chrysanthemums and we are planning to double the production this fall", he says."

Olga is representing Brockhoff Pierrot, Voorn Roses, Roseworld and Bernhard. According to Olga, the market is not that good as it used to be three years ago. However, it seems to improve and everybody is hoping that it will recover soon. Even though the fact that the plants are expensive, people are still interested in importing high quality plants and flowers.

"Alexander Brjuhins of Rosen Tantau and Stein Schouten of Florist Breeding. Rosen Tantau's first rose delivery was in 1996, and since 1998 they've been active on the Russian market. At the show, Brjuhins recognizes that people are looking for new varieties and that they are very interested in the roses with clear and contrasting colors. Their yellow and red rose for example (on the right side of the picture) is still in its test phase and caught the eye of many visitors. "The colors are very contrasting", says Brjuhins."

They sell plant material and bulbs to the Ukrainian growers and gained a large market share over the last years and especially in alstroemerias. "90 percent of the alstroemerias that are being cultivated here in Ukraine are supplied by Hortipol", says Wojtas."

"It is a good opportunity to maintain our relationships here in Ukraine. As we haven't been exhibiting at the show for a couple of years, we see that the visitors are attracted to some of our varieties that are on the market for several years now. They love new varieties and for them, these are new", says Abrosimova."

Flower Expo Ukraine 2016 is celebrating its 10-year anniversary. So, at the end of the first day, the exhibitors were invited to celebrate it with a festive drink and bite to eat.

"Kees van Beek and Krysztof Banas of Modiform. Beek is holding a tray to propogate trees. According to him, more trees are being produced in Ukraine and by using a tray like this, the productivity can be increase. Banas is holding two colored pots. According to him, there is a growing demand from the consumers side for these pots, so the growers will follow. Using colored pots is quite new for Ukrainian growers. For Modiform, Ukraine is a potential market. "We see that the consumers really love flowers and plants and therefore we are positive regarding the improvement of the situation."

"Göran Basjes of Kordes Rosen is holding the Verona, one of his new varieties that will be planted in Ukraine next year. According to Basjes, there are not that much rose growers in Ukraine, but the growers that are growing roses are doing a good job. They have high tech greenhouses and are eager to learn. Also the Red Eagle is a new variety. This new light red rose is now exclusively being cultivated and marketed by van der Arend roses in the Netherlands. In Ukraine, this variety will be planted in week 20 and will not be sold at the Dutch market. "We have done several tests and we are pleased with the results", says Basjes."

According to Boon, the local production in Ukraine is increasing. "The tulip is a relatively cheap flower and due to the low Hryvnia demand for this flower is higher than usual. This year has been a better year than last year, so we are moderately positive", he says."

The spray roses are upcoming. "They are very popular at the moment", he says. Every year Camellia introduces 2 or 3 new varieties in the market.
