Breeder open days, the Netherlands

Machteld Wijngaard of Florensis International next to Cabaret Tropicana MixMasters. The Cabaret series took center stage, because of the improved genetics of the series; larger flower, stronger colors and flowering earlier. Also many bee-friendly plants were on display.

It was still a bit early for the Echinacea, but the sobreroshaped flower is already visible. The robust platns are great for 13-15 cm pots or 2-3 liter containers. The characteristics of this series are: long flowering, well branching and compact plant habit. This is the yellow variety in the line Clebrate with Echinacea, but also the colors red and orange are part of this line.

Sanguisorba officinalis of Kolster usually flower from the end of June till August. These flowers are very early and have a good vase life, so a good addition to the assortmetnt. A new product of Kolster?Horteve that is still on code. This new variety is a cross with serrata. The leaves are small, it has a lot of branches and many flowers. Serrata is very winterhardy and drought resistant. Dutch grower Kwekerij De Jong will start growing them and they will also go to the USA.

A special flower; Xerochrysum bracteatum - Granvia 'Red Orange Flame'. It is a so-called dried flower (with petals 'like paper'). Several new colors are coming, now that we have succeeded in breeding the plant to produce "sturdy stems."

The third focus of the trial is of course the Sundaville. Developments in this field include plants with a thicker leaf that does not get spider mites, and also a much higher hardiness, so that it can be grown as a standing plant (as shown in the picture). And so without a rack, which would save a lot of labor.
