China: Sweet smell of success for flower sellers

Hongkongers spent more on Mother's Day than last year. At the Flower Market in Mong Kok, the chief designer at Hing Fat Flowers, Loretta Lee Tsui-wah, said revenue was up 10 percent, with new low-priced bouquets selling fast.

"They go for under HK$500 (64,5 USD)," Lee said. "This arrangement provides different choices." Carnations from the Netherlands and roses from Kenya were popular.

People will celebrate Mother's Day, no matter what the economic situation is, Lee said. The owner of New Shan Kala, Sung Yuk-yin, said the volume of imported flowers rose 20 percent over last year.
