Uganda: Exporters of flowers to get codes

The ministry of trade is to issue codes to all exporters of fresh fruits and vegetables as one of the measures to clean up the sector which is facing an impending ban from European markets.

This was revealed by the minister of trade Industry and Cooperatives, Amelia Kyambadde in an interview with New Vision in Kampala.

She added that the other measure is to ensure that each exporter has a nucleus farm which can then be used as a training ground of farmers on the best agronomic practices.

Kyambadde along with the ministry of agriculture recently imposed a ban on the exportation of fresh fruits and vegetables to EU markets until complaints of chemical residues and pests are addressed.

The purpose of the suspension was to allow for re-assessment of exporters and producers to establish on the level of compliance for quality, pest and disease control along the entire value chain.
