AU: Planting the Northern Territory's first commercial poppy crop

The Northern Territory's first commercial crop of poppies is being planted this week on Tipperary Station, about 200 kilometres south of Darwin.

After successfully trialling the crop on research stations near Katherine and the Douglas Daly, TPI Enterprises is now sowing 120 hectares in what it hopes will be the start of a significant industry for the Top End.

TPI's managing director Jarrod Ritchie said growing the crop outside of the traditional growing areas of Tasmania had a number of benefits.
