US (WA): Calendula flowers become beauty products
"We harvest them so we can specifically use them in skincare," said Saffle as she plucked. "All types of skin, especially sensitive skin, it's really good for that."
Calendula has healing properties that have been scientifically studied and historically documented. Calendula salves were used in war-time, before the invention of antibiotics, Saffle explained. The phytonutrients present in the blossoms are believed to help skin restore itself more quickly, and the Bodyceuticals website has testimonials from people who use it for everything from hair conditioning to eczema soothing, though Saffle does not make any medical claims for her product.
Saffle's bright, certified organic flowers are at their peak in August, when they're hand plucked.
After harvest they're dried, then processed by hand into skincare in products that are available by direct order, and on the shelves at PCC: The local store was among the first to retail Bodyceutical's Calendula Skincare products ten years ago.
Saffle makes everything from wrinkle cream to lip balm to body oils infused with the bright yellow and orange blossoms. But she says her best selling item is plain calendula balm or oil, which is a staple for many customers because of the flower's skin healing properties.
