China: Less flowers bought for Chinese New Year

Business is brisk at the 14th Chinese New Year (CNY) Bazaar held in Miri City but cannot match the volume of past years. Several traders and customers claimed that the slowdown in economy, weakening of the ringgit and implementation of the Good and Services Tax (GST) had affected spending and business.

Florist Chin Siaw Chin said business picked up on Thursday, the third day of the Bazaar’s opening. “Our stall being the only one selling fresh flowers drew many customers but the amount spent by them is less than last year. Probably due to GST and the weakening ringgit,” she said.
