NL: Hothouse babes make headline

Hot, hotter hottest. Last Monday, temperatures were at tropical highs in the Netherlands. At plant nursery Sjaak Buijs, not only the potted sunflowers enjoyed the water, their employees did too. These 'hot' pictures of the Dutch nursery made the front page of the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf.

According to Sjaak Buijs: "The employees are short-handed to reduce the heat stress on their potted sunflowers. Due to the extreme heat, the evaporation was high and the flowers are therefore being watered three times a day. Due to these tropical temperatures, the plants grow quickly. The temperatures rose to 35 degrees Celsius, despite the heat restricting measurements like chalk and a heat reflecting curtain.

Not only the plants, also the employees have to deal with these extreme high temperatures, as you can see.

Till the beginning of September, 13 Dutch growers will grow 5 million so-called 'Sunsation' potted sunflowers. According to the grower, they have not had such high temperatures in May in seven years.
