Ralph Maas, Carrier:

"Temperature-controlled transport is often client-specific"

In 2016, Carrier Transicold Netherlands acquired TRS Transportkoeling. This Dutch company, a manufacturer and service provider of sustainable transport refrigeration systems, became a well-known name in the transport of flowers and plants over the years. Their engine driven transport refrigeration uses a completely different technology than the conventional refrigeration solutions on trucks and trailers, which Carrier Transicold makes. The acquisition has enabled Carrier to provide a number of different customer-specific cooling solutions.

More than just refrigeration
"Temperature-controlled transport is often client-specific," says Ralph Maas, account manager at Carrier. "There are companies that do city distribution and are faced with ever-increasing environmental requirements in the area of emissions and noise. On the other hand, if you do business abroad and use a truck and trailer for transporting your bulbs, flowers and plants, then cooling that regulates the relative humidity is of great importance. Particularly for these types of fragile goods, the engineless system is a godsend. Accurate and constant temperature control is essential for ensuring the delivery of a fresh product of the highest quality. In both cases, a TRS system offers considerable benefits. "

Low emissions
Electric refrigeration is on the rise, offering both low emission and reduced noise levels. Low emissions are desired because the cleaner EURO 6 trucks of course have to be able to drive. So it makes sense to look for alternatives and therefore the joining forces of Carrier and TRS is not surprising.

The merger between the two companies is now largely complete, along with the transfer of customers, says Ralph. "I have North Holland and the Flevopolder in my portfolio. We happen to have a lot of customers there who are in the flower business. Many of them are of course interested in energy-efficient and sustainable refrigeration solutions, and we are able to help them with this."

Market in motion
"Currently the number of engineless refrigeration units on the market is still relatively small, but it is growing more and more. The TRS refrigeration technology uses the Eco-drive power module, a hydraulic system that generates 380V. Powering the refrigeration unit is one of the many applications of the Eco-drive power module. A TRS system is more sustainable and quieter. "

Hybrid solutions
With refrigeration technology available from both companies, combined solutions have been possible for some time, putting them comfortably ahead of the competition. With the Eco-drive power module, a conventional refrigeration unit can be run electrically while driving, with the diesel engine turning off automatically. If at any time the 380V becomes unavailable, the diesel engine will take over again so that climate control remains uninterrupted.

For Carrier, working together with and eventually acquiring TRS was a logical step forward. "In addition: TRS was always Dutch. If you had breakdowns abroad, you had a problem. With Carrier there is a worldwide service network, so we can help drivers anywhere in the world. "
