Danish grower produces Begonia Maculata from seed

The plant that is known as the ‘Trout Begonia’ is not a fishy plant at all. The white dots give the Begonia Maculata a unique appearance. In August, Danish company By Growers will introduce their Begonia Maculata. “The problem of this plant is that it is very hard to produce in large numbers. That’s why we decided to come up with a Begonia Maculata, which we produce from seeds instead of cuttings”, Nicolai Abildgaard tells us.

Jesper Madsen from By Growers at the IPM Essen 2018 holding the Begonia Maculata.

“It will still be a high end product, but by producing using seeds it’s much easier to meet the demand. We will supply 12 cm pots and the average price will be around € 3.50.”

“This Begonia is the first of our green assortment”, Nicolai says. “That is something requested by a Scandinavian garden center. One of our breeders was developing this Begonia. We showed it to them and based on their enthusiasm we decided this was going to be the first plant in the new assortment.”

However, it still takes a lot of time to produce the plants. Therefore By Growers decided to start the production small. “After completing this first production we will gauge the demand and the reaction of the customers. We are planning to expand the production in 2019.”
