US (MO): Polar Vortex damages flower grower's crops

The growers at Urban Buds were beaming with joy over their Valentine’s Day flower offerings, feeling successful and excited. As urban flower farmers in the heart of St. Louis, their goal is to bring high quality flowers when consumers need them. For the past several years, they have attempted to do just that. "Valentine’s Day flowers have always been a challenge, as well as a risk. Between heating costs, unpredictable weather, and the unknowns of uncharted territories, the risks were great but we were up for the challenge", they share.

But then disaster struck: "We walked into our greenhouse to what we are calling a Valentine’s Day massacre. As most of you experienced, last week’s polar vortex was out of the scope of what we are accustomed to for winter weather. Nighttime lows well below zero coupled with a power failure spelled disaster for our beautiful, ready-to-harvest crops."

Because the grower can’t offer flowers on Valentine’s Day this year, they are instead offering gift certificates from $25-$100. "Giving one of these gift certificates to your loved ones for Valentine’s Day is actually like giving three gifts – the gift of the freshest flowers available, the gift of local and naturally grown flowers, and the gift of support for your local flower farmers. The gift certificates are redeemable at both of our Farmers’ Markets – Saturdays at Tower Grove and Sundays at The Boulevard. Amounts can also be applied to event design. And for those of you who aren’t local to St. Louis but still want to spread some love this Valentine’s Day, we’d be happy to pay it forward to a lucky stranger."
