Protecting nurseries and industry in New Zealand from biosecurity hazards

Work with nurseries through 2019’s pilot programme provided valuable feedback for improvements to the PPBS. These have been implemented, and major changes include:

  • The Core Standard has been split into two documents. These are the Standard Requirements and the PPBS Guidance.
  • Following a risk assessment, producers can now offer alternative solutions to any issues that arise. During the pilot, two nurseries demonstrated out of the box approaches that were more relevant to their businesses. Over time, these sorts of solutions will add to the scheme’s body of knowledge and improve its relevance across our diverse industry.
  • Separating container and field production issues help improve the Scheme’s use in field production nurseries.
  • A new and improved ‘one-stop’ checklist has been created, replacing the old checklists.
