Putting the grower first in crop protection

The goal of a Texas based horticultural technology start up is to help the world thrive with healthier harvests, and to help growers reach that goal John Appel, president of Verano365, and Dave Coorts, technical director, talk about their products, and how they complement each other. Several new products are expected to be launched in 2020.

Root system
Nutrivix Zn|Cu is the newest product. “It evolved out of the needs of growers,” tells Dave. Nutrivix helps plants roots to develop better. Beneficial micronutrients like zinc and copper have a positive effect on the development of the root system. The company did a lot of testing and trialling with the product, showing survivability of cuttings was higher and increases in root and shoot mass as high as a 100%. Vigorous root production is the primary focus, but the risk of heat stress or salt stress also can be mitigated.

Stress
Rooted cuttings are under a lot of stress. The combination of zinc and copper can trigger superoxide dismutase (SOD), an enzyme that sponges free radicals and protects the chloroplasts and membranes of the cell and reduces this stress and stimulates root growth.

“We try to understand problems or production challenges for growers,” explain John and Dave. One of the issues is shrinkage. The average loss of seedling plugs is about 15% and about 12% for rooted cuttings. The loss on some woody ornamentals could be as high as 50%. “We saw a need there, and we developed a product to meet that need. This was the stimulus for the development of Nutrivix Zn|Cu.”

Complementing
The product also complements the company’s earlier product Thrivedo, which helps in building biomass, enhances the amount of flowers, and thus yield. It works both for vegetable produce and for ornamentals, to prolong shelf life. The use rates are for Thrivedo and Nutrivix are very low, especially in combination with OpusMAX, the proprietary host solution that is the base for all Verano365 products. This product works by forming a synergy with other products, it enhances the qualities of other products and benefits.

Nutrivix Zn|Cu is registered for use in more than 30 US states, and counting. “We expect other state registrations to be completed shortly and will subsequently seek registration in Canada,” says John.
