What colors are hot in pot roses?

“We see that all kind of yellows and orange to coffee colors are colors that customers start to like to see in pot roses increasingly more,” says Rosa Eskelund of Roses Forever. For this reason, this Danish rose breeder has been selecting orange and yellow in many shades for production trials for several years now and Rosa is pleased to say that they have several new varieties in these colors available for growers.

More time for breeding
This year has been a special one, no doubt about that, and according to Rosa, the best thing about this challenging year that they’ve had is that they got more time to do things in another and better way. “Usually, we participated in a lot of fairs and this means that we often need a lot of time to prepare for these fairs. Now, in 2020 we use this time for our breeding plans, breeding and especially selection and it seems to have been very effective. An even without the exhibitions, we still receive requests from growers for a license to grow, from all corners of the world.”

New orange/brown to be a bestseller
Yellow and orange colors are hot, explains Rosa and she therefore is very happy that she can offer these colors to the growers now. “Orange in many shades is selected for production tests and also yellow. Especially we have a new orange / brown pot rose which we believe will be a bestseller, first because the long-life is very good, when the flower get older its even more a beauty.”

New colors are hot, but main colors are the basis
Even though Rosa is investing a lot of time in breeding, trialing and introducing new colors- like green, brown , grey and bi-colours, she never loses sight of the ‘main’ colors. “The market is always looking for new colors, but the pallet of these six colors (red, pink, rosa baby, yellow, orange and white) will always be there. Therefore, it is important to keep investing in these colors as well. We select for more brightness in every main color. In the six main colours we, of course always, even they already are the best in market, we still work to make them even better in long-life, easy grow and bestselling, that means it must always be a good choice for a grower.”

Also new and bright colors in garden roses
Also in garden roses, Rosa sees a demand in new and bright colors. “People have big interest for plants and flowers and with roses there in many who is collectors of garden roses - they buy the rose by name and make small rose gardens.”
