In the morning of April 23, the Vietnam Academy of Agricultural Sciences and the Hanoi Department of Agriculture and Rural Development held a seminar on “Development of flowers and ornamental plants, the ecological economic sector in building new-style rural, intelligent and elegant urban culture.” Over 250 delegates from governmental management organizations, scientists, flower–bonsai growers, and traders from different provinces and cities nationwide have attended.
According to the Center for Research and Development of Flowers – Ornamental Plants (Fruit and Vegetable Research Institute – Vietnam Academy of Agricultural Sciences), Vietnam has diverse climatic resources, including tropical, sub-tropical, and temperate, providing the possibility to grow various kinds of flowers and ornamental plants. Vietnam Communist Party and Government always pay great attention to develop flower-ornamental plants growing industry into ecological economic sectors associated with the environment protection and cope with the climate change. Up to now, the country has about 45,000 hectares of flowers and ornamental plants grown in concentrated cultivation; achieved an average income of 520 million VND / ha/year; estimated revenue is 23,400 billion VND / year. At the present, the demand for flowers – ornamental plants is quite high, developing flowers – ornamental plants will increase income for people, improve a healthy living environment, promote the construction of new rural areas and civilized urban areas.
According to the Director of the Hanoi Rural Development Department Nguyen Van Chi, there are about 8,000 hectares of ornamental plants in Hanoi; In that 70% is concentrated in districts: Bac Tu Liem, Tay Ho, Me Linh, Dan Phuong. Over the past years, Hanoi has its own strategy of developing flowers and ornamental plants by supporting farmers; building new rural models such as Hong Van commune landscape creature tourist village (Thuong Tin district); encourage ornamental creatures like Rural flower roads, illustrated lines; more flowers – less garbage.
At the workshop, the references also pointed out many limitations in the development and trading of flowers – ornamental plants: fragmented, spontaneous, lack of master plan; applying high technology is still limited; weak management association. Delegates proposed some resolutions such as: Strengthening scientific research tools; set up regional production planning with concentrated, supporting infrastructure; propose to the Government to consider flowers – ornamental plants as a key economic sector with practical support policies.
At the seminar, the authorities also warned about the risks in investing in flowers – ornamental plants, including spreading and recommending people to take precautions, raise warnings about scams that cause confusion in public, to protect true flower growers, traders, and producers.
In the framework of the seminar, there were also other activities: Launching the Campaigning Committee to establish a Vietnamese Orchid production and trading association; responding to the Program of Planting 1 billion green trees; honor the typical artisans, entrepreneurs, garden owners who have valuable volunteer activities to support the community.
