Australia: Haars Nursery achieves Fair Farm Certification

Haars Nursery announces that it has achieved Fair Farms certification. Haars Nursery is one of Australia’s largest wholesale plant producers supplying Australian retailers and growers with quality flowering indoor and outdoor plants, an extensive range of herbs and vegetables, indoor house plants, hanging baskets, and shrubs for garden landscapes

. Haars Nursery’s ability to consistently introduce & produce quality varieties has established the company as a preferred partner to key Australian retailers, propagators, and growers nationally and a key partner of international breeders and young plant producers.

Fair Farm is an industry-led initiative aimed at fostering fair and responsible employment practices in Australian horticulture. The program is an industry-owned social compliance training and certification program which has been designed to help growers improve their compliance with workplace laws and to demonstrate to buyers and the community that they treat workers in a fair, ethical, and responsible manner.

Fair Farms is developed and implemented by a horticulture peak industry body, Growcom, with support from the Federal Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment, AUSVEG, Fresh Markets Australia, and the National Farmers Federation Horticulture Council. “We decided to go for Fair Farms certification to ensure we keep delivering best practices across the company with regards to all our team members. Being fair, ethical, and responsible to all our staff, whether they be full-time, casual, or contract.

There has been some speculation in our industry with regards to staff being underpaid or being treated unfairly – we want to clearly separate ourselves in the market and proactively work with our customers, community, and employees to ensure we continue to deliver best practice’ said Brendan Haar, General Manager, Haars Nursery. “We are proud of how we work with our staff, and the Fair Farms certification enables us to consolidate this in our operations and be a leader in the industry.” “We would encourage any other nursery to not look at Certification as a way to continue to raise the professionalism of our industry and continue to attract and retain good talent.”
