CAN: Sheridan Nurseries celebrates 110 years

Just in time for this year’s planting season, Sheridan Nurseries is growing again, opening its newest location in Aurora, Ont. — located at 15630 Bayview Avenue. At the new Sheridan Nurseries garden center in Aurora, you will find over 100,000 square feet of live goods, including a nursery that features premium-quality trees, flowering shrubs, evergreens, and other hardy, ornamental nursery stock.

Choose from a beautiful selection of perennials and annuals to add timeless beauty and color to your gardens, and visit the greenhouse, featuring an exotic collection of tropical foliage and flowering houseplants. You’ll also find all the supplies and tools to set you up for success in your garden, as well as an extensive collection of patio furniture, outdoor accessories, home decor, and fashion.

For over a century, Ontario gardeners have been growing with Sheridan Nurseries, a pioneer of Canadian horticulture. Its roots date back to 1911 when British landscape architects Howard and Lorrie Dunington-Grubb arrived in Toronto with dreams of bringing the concept of the English garden here to Canada.

It’s hard to imagine now, but at that time, there were virtually no private gardens or landscape architecture in the country and no nurseries here that could produce the plants they needed. So, in 1913, they started their own, purchasing 100 acres of land near Sheridan, Ont. (now part of Oakville) in order to cultivate ornamental plants, marking the beginning of Sheridan Nurseries as we know it today.
