Transparent green packs awarded OPRL sustainability certification

Consumers get through mountains of green PET bottles every single day. Modiform uses those empty bottles as raw material to make transparent green packs, which themselves are fully recyclable after use. This has one huge advantage: unlike black packs, these packs are easily detectable by waste processors and therefore do not end up in the incinerator. As the packs have the right composition of materials, color, and format, they can be recycled when consumers dispose of them with their plastic, metal, and drinking carton waste. Modiform started the transition to recyclable packs years ago, and the transparent green PET packs are considered an important recyclable alternative. This sustainable step was also fully embraced by the market. The products are Cyclos-certified for several countries and can now bear the OPRL recycling logo in the UK.

Created to assess consumer waste recycling, the OPRL (the on-pack recycling label) is specific to the UK. Together with RECOUP, OPRL is committed to improving recycling and checking the veracity of sustainability claims. The OPRL recycling label guarantees a thorough analysis of the recyclability of packaging items, including Modiform’s transparent green packs.

Passed the test with flying colors
John van de Maarel, Sales Director at Modiform, said: ‘We thoroughly researched and tested the packs’ sustainability credentials before production. In all the products we design and produce, we always make sustainable decisions. This is a key point for us, and we have set it out in our Horizon2025 ambition: we want to kick out all virgin plastic by 2025 and close the material loop. The transparent green PET packs naturally bring us closer to that goal. We have our products examined and certified by Cyclos. For the UK, we asked the OPRL to examine and certify our packs. They passed the test with flying colors.’ In addition, we asked our partner, Recoup to research the recycling of PS packs in the UK. This research shows that PS packs are not recycled regardless of the color of the pack. The OPRL certification and the research on PS packs prove that using transparent green R-PET for packs in the UK is the right sustainable choice.
