Nursery seeks to improve automation with potting line machine

"The availability, cost, and quality of labor continue to affect successful businesses across Australia restricting productivity, profitability, and necessary expansion. Powerplants are often brought in to consult on improving labor efficiency in Production Nurseries so growers can scale up their operations using the good staff they already have," states Powerplants.

They add: "A recent example is the Nursery automation upgrades at ePlants Trade Nurseries. Powerplants installed a Javo potting machine where interconnected conveyors feed a "distribution" buffer belt. Using a specialized forklift the staff can now pick up and distribute hundreds of pots throughout the nursery that were previously handled manually."

According to Powerplants, the second "collection" buffer belt allows plants that have grown up to be automatically re-spaced into a different pattern and distributed back into the nursery. Another small but significant upgrade is the use of a "bark topper" which distributes a mulch layer on top of every pot eliminating the need for expensive and unnecessary herbicide. This comprehensive setup has significantly streamlined the nursery's production process.

According to the company, the Javo line offers flexibility and precision in handling various pot sizes and distribution configurations. Together, these machines form a robust automation system that enhances productivity and reduces labor costs. Local commissioning and training are essential to ensure the maximum benefit is achieved from this investment that is tailored to the nursery's needs."
