German flower market remains under pressure

The market for flowers and ornamental plants was also under noticeable pressure in 2025. At the same time, the picture within the individual product segments was mixed. This is shown by current figures from Agrarmarkt Informations-Gesellschaft mbH (AMI). According to AMI estimates, the total market for flowers and ornamental plants shrank in 2025 to around €8.6 billion at retail prices. While numerous top sellers were able to maintain their positions, there were sometimes significant shifts in the other rankings. Seasonal products in particular benefited from a revival in business towards the end of the year.

"The results clearly show how strained our industry continues to be. For some time now, many businesses have been struggling with rising costs, uncertain consumers, and overall weak demand in 2025," explains Frank Werner, Chairman of the Federal Association of Ornamental Plant Growers (BVZ) within the Central Horticultural Association (ZVG).

"However, one thing remains true: flowers and plants are simply part of everyday life for many people. We see that every day. Especially in economically challenging times, this piece of everyday life becomes particularly valuable – and we want to make that more visible together," adds Ulrich Haage, Chairman of the Federal Association of Retail Gardeners (BVE) within the ZVG.

For bedding and balcony plants, consumers in Germany spent more than €20 per capita last year, according to AMI estimates. Summer heather, as a virtually unrivalled top performer in the autumn segment, led the Top 10 for the eleventh consecutive time and was able to gain another two percentage points in 2025. Geraniums slightly improved their results – contrary to the general trend. Their drought tolerance in particular is likely to have created an additional incentive to purchase. Pansies once again held third place. Overall, the early bedding and balcony season in 2025 was characterised by weather-related reluctance to buy and uncertainty. It was only in the fourth quarter that the market briefly gained momentum, from which autumn crops in particular benefited.

For flowering houseplants, consumers in Germany spent around €11 per capita, slightly less than in the previous year. Orchids continued to clearly lead the ranking and increased their share to around 33 percent. They were followed again by poinsettias with a share of 11 percent. Kalanchoe moved up to third place, displacing roses to fourth place.

Per capita spending on green houseplants also declined slightly. On average, each resident of Germany invested about €6 in this segment in 2025. The range continues to be dominated by the broad group of foliage ornamental plants. Palms increased significantly and returned to second place, while cacti and succulents fell to third place.

For cut flowers, consumers in Germany spent a nearly stable €37 per capita in 2025. Here too, the fourth quarter provided positive momentum. Roses (42 percent), tulips (13 percent), and chrysanthemums (11 percent) once again held the top three positions unchanged in 2025.
