Canada (ON): First local bio control business that is mass-producing beneficial insects in Leamington

A speck of a bug is helping Mustafa Cheema get into a $20-million market. He’s breeding beneficial bugs to kill bad bugs in greenhouses and his top seller is Orius insidiosus, the minute pirate bug. This pinhead-size pirate is a natural predator of greenhouse pests like thrips.

On a good day Cheema’s GrowLiv lab in Leamington can produce 6,000 to 10,000 of the minute pirate bugs and within an hour deliver them to a greenhouse.

Greenhouse operators already buy imported beneficial insects and Cheema said GrowLiv is the first local bio control business that is mass-producing beneficial insects in Leamington to sell to Ontario greenhouse vegetable growers. Cheema, who has his PhD in integrated pest management, started his GrowLiv operation last year. He was selling beneficial insects by February and moved to Leamington in March with plans to expand.
