F1 genetics built to perform

Genetics directly affect labour efficiency, margin and plant quality. When margins are tight and schedules precise, uniformity and reliability matter. "That is where Schoneveld Breeding F1 genetics make a measurable difference," says commercial director Niels Zoetelief.

What does F1 technically mean
"F1 (first-generation) is not a marketing term," says breeder Sadrach Talahatu. "Technically you are crossing 2 genetically distinct stable parent lines. Because they differ, the offspring become more vigorous, uniform and resilient. That is heterosis in practice."

Compared to OP (open-pollinated) material, the difference is structural. OP varieties are genetically more inbred. An OP will never match the strength of an F1. "With F1, you actively build vigour into the crop," Sadrach explains.

Operational impact in the greenhouse
Growers using F1 genetics experience clear benefits. Crops are more uniform in flowering, height and size. It requires less harvesting selection and therefore increases labour efficiency. Stronger plants with better pot fill mean lower waste. The result is a crop that looks better and performs more efficiently.

"Uniformity is not a luxury. It is cost control," says Niels Zoetelief. "If you can harvest almost everything in one round, you directly reduce labour and waste."

The Schoneveld Breeding traits
Schoneveld Breeding genetics are known for:

  • Uniform growth and flowering within a series
  • Round plant shape with sturdy flower stems
  • Rich and central flowering
  • Long shelf life

"We invest years in developing and understanding our parent lines," says Sadrach. "This allows us to create reliable hybrids. They all combine vigour, uniformity and quality."

For specific crops, additional traits are carefully selected to match market and environmental demands. The unique Illusia F1 also focuses on compact growth, excellent bud formation and continuous flowering. The same approach applies to Gaultheria procumbens Ciao Bella F1. Parent lines are selected for berry visibility, compact growth and stronger tolerance under lower input.

"Developing true F1 quality takes more time," Niels adds. "You can go faster, but then you have to compromise. Schoneveld Breeding's vision has been consistent for decades: build the strongest genetic foundation first. That is why so many growers are eager to test our introductions when entering the market."
