Determination, patience key to rose brilliance

It's the best rose in the country, chosen by popular vote and will raise funds for cancer patients when it goes on sale next year.

Tauranga rose breeder Rob Somerfield spent 12-years perfecting his award winning rose, Looking Good. It was an arduous task but one the 32-year veteran breeder said he wouldn't give away.

"It's basically 10-years to breed one and get it on the market," said Somerfield. "It's not the sort of job you would do unless you loved it. It's the best job in the world."

Bred at Somerfield's Te Puna nursery, Looking Good won the New Zealand Rose of the Year title in Hamilton on Sunday.
