"US (MN): "Insane Mother's Day" for 80-year-old nursery"

Joe Bergeson is rooted to the land.

He runs Bergeson Nursery, carrying on a tradition started by his grandparents, Melvin and Olga Bergeson, who founded the business near Fertile nearly 80 years ago.

"It's a wonderful place, a wonderful job," Joe said as he walked around the sprawling property with visitors earlier this month. "It's never boring — it's different every day."

The nursery offers an assortment of windbreak and fruit trees, shrubs, roses and other flowers as well as vegetable and herb plants. Shrubs include raspberry, currants, gooseberry and cherry. Vegetable plants include sweet and hot peppers, asparagus, tomatoes, squash, pumpkin, watermelon, broccoli and cauliflower.

It also includes about 8 to 10 acres of nursery stock, several buildings and greenhouses — each dedicated to a specific purpose — and 2 acres for a display garden.

At peak season in spring, the nursery employs close to 20 people.

When asked what the busiest day is, he says "Mother's Day," without hesitation. "It was completely insane this year. It was kind of frightening."
