CAST: What you've missed at Greenfuse Botanicals and Suncrest

Many varieties were on display at the California Spring Trials 2019. So, even if you visited the event, you could have missed some. For this reason, FloralDaily.com presents several highlights that were on display at the participating companies in a series of articles. We visited all locations and already published the Photo Report of the event that gives a general impression of the event, but in this series, we go deeper into the varieties that were on display. Today, we present the highlight varieties of Hishtil, Cohen, Jaldety and Nir Nursery at Suncrest Nursery in Watsonville and Greenfuse Botanicals, Elsner PAC and Westhoff at the Greenfuse Botanicals site in Santa Paula.

Suncrest Nursery

For the second time, Suncrest Nursery is the host for the Israeli companies Hishtil, Cohen, Jaldety, Nir Nursery and Kamel.

Hishtil

The team of Hishtil, from left to right: Haim Rosenblum, Eyal Kleinberger and Eyal Inbar, presenting Lavendula angustifolia 'Beezee'™. The series, bred by David Kerley, consists of five different colors, with the same flowering window and habit. 'BeeZee'™ was introduced by Hishtil last year at 'Flower Trials'. The interest has increased since. See this article to learn more about 'BeeZee'™.

Several varieties in the GrowFlow series, one of Hishtil's concepts were on display as well. In this concept, all cascading edible varieties are included. "It makes the gardener who is interested in edible plants more aware of the edible herbs that are available."

"Thymus spp. 'Sparkling Bright'™ preforms a steady year round variegated green & white leaves with upright growth habit. It has a fruity rose scent and at summer time you can expect bright pink small flowers."

Nir Nursery

Asaf Nir with his father Nitzan Nir. Asaf is holding rice flower and Nitzan color wax. The color of this wax comes from the plant itself. It has not been painted, tinted or dyed.

Rey displayed in different forms. Rey is a intergeneric cross between chamelaucium and verticordia has been put on the market last year. It is different to a wax flower; "the branch structures, leaves and flowers are completely different from what many probably know for a wax flower". The flower is big with a fuchsia pink color and the flowers last for about 2 to 3 months.

Adenanthos Chris Tal is a 'friendly Christmas tree' as the leaves are soft.

Cohen Propagation Nurseries

Nomi Hen of Cohen Propagation Nursery presenting Nemesia Honey Dark Purple. It is a new variety in the Nemesia series, bred by Breier, and is natural compact.

Antirrhinum Alura is a new series bred by Genesis in the UK. At the CAST, Cohen showed it for the first time and for 20/21 it will be commercial.

Blue Shade is added to the Petunia Happy Classic series, a series bred by Israeli breeder Breier. It is an existing series and continuously new varieties are being added. This year, 5 varieties are added and Blue Shade is one of the new varieties.

Jaldety Propagation Plant Nurseries

Rely Jaldety of Jaldety presenting Sedum Silver Roses. This new color is according to Rely a good addition to their assortment. “The color silver or silver blue is always doing well.”

Senecio SIlvery Velvet is a new compact Senecio with silver leaves. Some of the main advantages of this variety, according to Jaldety, are the dense habit in full sun and the color that does not fade, turns gray or green in a hot summers.

Salvia Amante PPAF/PBR is a new salvia variety that flowers in spring and summer and has fuchsia light red flowers.

Greenfuse Botanicals

Last year, FloraNova was presenting its novelties at the Greenfuse Botanicals location, but since Syngenta Flowers represent this company in North America, they were at Syngenta this year. And the space left was by PAC Elsner and Westhoff this year.

Entrance to Greenfuse Botanicals. At this location PAC Elsner, Westhoff and T.O. Plastics are presenting their varieties and products.

Greenfuse Botanicals

Steve Jones of Greenfuse Botanicals presenting the Rudbeckia Rising Sun Chesnut Gold. This large flowered variety flowers day light neutral. It flowers in 12 weeks, any time of the year. “Usually they flower late in summer and only blooms on very long days, but this variety already flowers under short days.”

Leucanthemum Betsy is the Leuchantemum largest flower size in Greenfuse's Leucanthemum assortment and is day neutral. The other flowers laid on the plant are Darling Daisy (upper left), Double Darling (upper right), and White Mountain (in the middle).

Salvia Fashion is a cross with splendens and buchananii. "It is very heat tolerant, more branching and has a better pot appearance due to the very dark bracts."

Westhoff

Manfred Mehring of Westhoff Flowers presenting Silver Strand in the Fancy Fillers collection, one of the varieties he breeds. It is a structure plant that looks like a succulent, but isn’t. It grows faster than a succulent and therefore works well in combinations. It grows a bit taller in a combo, but does not grow over.

Sea Salt
is another new variety in the Fancy Fillers Collection. It is an artemisia that has a more mounding to trailing habit and is hardy to zone 4.

A new combination in the Passion Combo collection is Sky full of Stars. The combination consists of Calibrachoa Candy Shop Grape Splash and Petunia Constellation Virgo.

Elsner PAC

Jörg Mehle of Elsner PAC presenting the Pinkerbell. This geranium does not need any cooling and flowers all summer long. It is said to be the most heat tolerant regal geranium. Nice to mention is that this German breeding company is celebrating its 135th anniversary this year and is still a family business.

For growing the Darko series, no PGRs are needed. "It's more compact than other zonal varieties, making perfect quart sized plants without the need of PGRs. And for the consumer: flower colors pop off the dark foliage and remain healthier looking in the garden without yellowing."

TWOinONE White
is the latest introduction to the interspecific pac® TWOinONE series. The plants in the series have a medium-strong, rounded habit, are free flowering with large flowers and are claimed to flower very early. Plants of this series are suitable for large containers, mixed plantings or as ground cover even.
