Nature's Ventures

New company enters rose breeding world

After breeding for 7 years, the new Kenyan breeding company Nature's Ventures is happy to show their own bred rose varieties to the world. This company, which is part of the VP Group – which has 300 ha flower production - showcased their varieties for the first time at the IFTEX 2019 that took place earlier this month. "We focus on roses for all segments worldwide", says Vijay Jadhav, Technical Manager at the farm.

Key factors in breeding
Key factors in their breeding are, according to Jadhav appearance, production and improving the shelf life of the rose. "Regarding shelf life, all our roses have a 18-day shelf life from harvest till end consumer. On top of that, all varieties in their assortment have a 3.5 to 4.0 opening stage. "without any drop-outs", adds Jadhav.

Different lines
They will supply different varieties for different lines and stem length. "In bud height, there is a 4+, 5+ and 6+ cm line and in stem lengths the 40-50 cm and the 50-80 cm. We will try to have a product for each line and focus on the colors that are in high demand. And beyond doubt, the technical aspects for the grower have to be right."

Close cooperation with growers
Nature's Ventures was established in November 2018 and is part of the VP group which has 300 ha of rose production divided over a number of farms. And according to Jadhav, this is advantageous for this new breeding company. "Together with the growers and the exports within the group, we can more easily respond to the wishes of both the growers and the retailers." All new varieties are tested at their test area at Kongoni River Farm (Star Division) at the Flower Business Park in Naivasha.
