Next step: "move those varieties to the gardening sector"

A peek in the creation of heat tolerant cyclamen varieties

Creating new cyclamen varieties that will have flowering pot-plants with winter quality, in the summer. This was the aim of cyclamen breeding company Decor Breeding, 12 years ago. After years of breeding, they recently introduced their first heat tolerant varieties (click here to read the article). Now, in a video, they give a peek at their facilities in Kfar Rut, in Israel to show the live performance of their "Cella" cyclamen varieties.

"After finding hundreds of varieties of breeding lines that were very good in summertime the next phase was finding the right combinations of F1 to get the stability and body together with the heat tolerance that we need in order to go on the market", explains Gideon Scovel, co-founder and R&D Director at the company, when standing at the over 30 degrees Celcius greenhouse together with co-founder and Business & Commercial Director at Decor Breeding Amir Drori.

Now, Decor Breeding has F1 varieties of which several are ready to go to the market. "We actually are seeing the accomplishment of our goals for the first time in a large assortment of varieties: small flower, medium flower and large flower."

The next phase of selection, which they've already begun, is the gardening sector, a sector that is according to Scovel probably completely neglected by the cyclamen industry. "We believe that if we have good heat tolerant cyclamens; early varieties, early flowering that we can also move those varieties to the gardening sector and begin trialing varieties outdoors."
