Udo van Slooten, Signify:

"We sold over 100 hectares of toplighting compact grow lights in the first year alone"

Signify has expanded its Philips GreenPower LED toplighting compact range to give growers more choices tailored to different crops and cultivation set-ups. Whether they want to decrease running costs for lettuce or chrysanthemum crops or increase light output for light-loving crops like roses and medicinal cannabis. The first toplighting compact was launched in 2019 to provide a 1-to-1 replacement for HPS lighting to LED that fits seamlessly in existing HPS set-ups and trellis constructions, saving time and money on installation. The lights will be available in European markets as of Q2 and North American markets as of Q3.

“We’ve never seen such an enthusiastic response for a new product in such a short time. We sold over 100 hectares of toplighting compact grow lights in the first year alone,” said Udo van Slooten, Business Leader Horticulture at Signify. “That confirms that we chose the right approach to make it easier for growers to shift to LED lighting. A wide variety of vegetable growers like Den Berk Delice and Bryte in the Benelux and also many floriculture growers like Waalzicht, Arcadia and Van der Harg, are amongst the growers that have chosen for the new Philips toplighting compact. We expect an even larger group of growers to convert to LED with the improved version of the toplighting compact.”

The right fit for every crop
Growers can choose from a wide variety of modules to meet their specific needs. The high output module provides up to 2650 µmol/s of light to boost results for light-loving crops. This allows growers with a CHP system in place to make maximum use of their power to gain higher yields or increase quality with higher light output while using the same amount of power. Other growers may want to choose to optimize the running costs for the lifetime of their LED product with just 520 W per grow light and an efficiency of up to 3.6 µmol/s. This is ideal for growers living in countries with high energy costs.

Easy 1-to-1 HPS to LED replacement
Whatever the choice, growers can easily switch from HPS to LED by simply installing the compact grow light on their existing trellis. Plug and play. For new greenhouses, the installation is even simpler through easy to install brackets. The universal design of this system allows growers to equip their greenhouse with full LED or create a hybrid LED and HPS lighting system on their current set-up. Signify has also outfitted the compact range with standard and wide beam optics. The wide beam is ideal for growers in need of an optimal light distribution or for instants low greenhouse situation. For crops that allow for a larger distance between the plant and the grow lights, the standard beam is the better choice.

Availability of specific models varies per country, so growers should contact their local Philips Horticulture LED partner for more information. A demo for the toplighting compact can be seen at the IPM (28-31 Jan) and Fruit Logistica (5-7 Feb) show.
