Taiwanese breeder seeks global partners for Alocasia ‘Black Tortoise’

Sunmount Flora Co., a Taiwan-based horticultural company specializing in comprehensive Alocasia breeding, tissue culture, and international licensing, has officially released its Spring 2026 Lookbook. The catalog's centerpiece is the Alocasia 'Black Tortoise'. Currently gearing up for a synchronized global launch in 2027, Sunmount Flora is actively seeking international distributors and commercial partners.

A game-changer for growers and consumers
Recently honored as one of Taiwan's Top 10 New Plant Varieties of 2025, Alocasia 'Black Tortoise' is already generating buzz among international floral companies. Industry experts praise it as a robust upgrade and a potential future successor to the popular Alocasia micholitziana 'Frydek'.

Aesthetically, the plant is a standout, featuring striking, velvety dark emerald-green leaves that contrast sharply with distinct white venation. However, its true value lies in its exceptional commercial performance and grower-friendly traits:

1. Accelerated Production Cycle: 'Black Tortoise' boasts a growth rate that is significantly faster than many traditional Alocasia varieties, cutting production time by a third to a half. Plugs achieve a stable, rooted system in just one month. From there, plants transplanted into 5-inch pots reach a marketable size of three large leaves in only two additional months.

2. Superior Disease and Pest Resistance: Designed to perform in challenging climates, it exhibits excellent resistance to Phytophthora, rust, and soft rot, thriving even in high-heat and high-humidity environments. Additionally, it shows a remarkably low susceptibility to spider mites.

3. High Cold Tolerance: The variety can withstand temperatures as low as 15°C (59°F). While growth temporarily pauses at these temperatures, the plant does not suffer from chilling injuries, such as petiole twisting or yellowing, ensuring higher crop security during transport and transitional seasons.

IP protection and global strategy
To protect this premium genetic line, Sunmount Flora has already secured Plant Breeder's Rights (PBR) in Taiwan and Japan, with a U.S. Plant Patent currently pending. This strong intellectual property foundation guarantees exclusive advantages for future licensed partners.

Jacob Huang, COO of Sunmount Flora Co., highlights the strategic vision behind the release: "With 'Black Tortoise', our breeding team has successfully combined striking visual appeal with unparalleled, reliable performance for commercial growers. As we look toward our global launch in 2027, we are actively seeking forward-thinking international distributors and marketing partners who share our commitment to bringing top-tier aroid genetics to the global stage. We invite the industry to explore our Spring 2026 Lookbook and discover the future of Alocasia."
