Dendrobium cultivation in India: The bumpy road to success

The Indian culture is always associated with varied flowers like marigold, jasmine, tuberose and high value cut flowers like gerbera, carnation, rose, chrysanthemum etc. However, over the last years, the dendrobium, once supposed to be an exotic/imported flower, has taken a center place in every decoration done during wedding events as well as other grand events. Therefore, the popularity of growing dendrobium orchids in India increased sharply, being 10 acres a decade ago to approximately 150 acres now. However, the road was quite a bumpy one, explains Rohan Jadhav of KF Bioplants.

"Over the last 5 years the dendrobium orchid projects grew in leaps and bounds, however, with many issues like lack of good quality plants, technical know-how, investment cost, myths about improper cultivation and so on."

After thorough analysis; KF Bioplants saw a chance to put better varieties on the market and they decided to explore this opportunity. "We tied up with reliable suppliers to supply quality plants to our growers. After successful cultivation of projects in western Maharashtra, growers from all over India started cultivating dendrobium orchids looking at the longevity, low maintenance and potential market demand." KF not only did provide the plants but successful technical support to our growers to ensure quality production.

And according to Jadhav, it was an extra ordinary moment for KF Bioplants when their growers Mr. Ramnath Garade’s & Mr. Yogesh Memane’s dendrobium flowers were asked to decorate the Lord Vitthal & Rukmini Idols at Pandharpur (Maharashtra). "This is the most auspicious and holy place being visited by millions of farmers and other citizens of the state and the country on the auspicious occasion of “Ashadi Ekadashi”!'

The stunning visuals of Lord Vitthal's garlands with two premium varieties; Sonia red and Sonia White were a treat to watch. The videos and photos spread like wildfire across the country and a sense of curiosity generated amongst the citizens about Dendrobium orchid flowers. "It is really an achievement for our growers; Mr. Ramnath Garade & Mr. Yogesh Memane to be blessed with this opportunity. The quality of flowers has gained them fame in the flower market."

They are sure that dendrobium orchids will be a great crop for our farmer’s community.
