Marigolds are increasing in popularity as a cut flower and one of the largest breeders of African/American F1 Marigolds, AmeriSeed recently introduced a new variety: “Sumati” Orange. It has been bred and produced under tropical conditions and seems to be a good cut flower variety for vases, bouquets, and The Day of the Dead Festival.
“The honeycomb-shaped blooms are large, firm, long-lasting with an extended shelf life. Sumati grows vigorously and produces a well-branched plant with long stems. The variety has excellent adaptability to a wide range of climates and can also be used as a garden bedding and landscape plant,” explains AmeriSeed’s Beam Sailern.
Sumati is a tall variety and, another advantage for growers is that it does not need trellis netting to prevent lodging. Under short days conditions, the plant height ranges between 22-24” 55-60 cms, however the height increases to 35-45” (90-110 cms) during long days. “It has a very strong plant habit.”
For home gardens, it is a low maintenance variety with a long garden life. “It can be enjoyed for at least 2 months from first flowering and with extra care it can have a garden life of up to 3 months.”
But what does Sumati mean? The word “Sumati” means to be wise and have a good mind and is derived from Sanskrit – ‘Su’ meaning “Good” and ‘Mati’ meaning “Mind or Thought.” In the Hindu epic “The Mahabharata” SUMATI is the name of King Sagara’s second wife, who bore him 60,000 children. Unfortunately, AmeriSeed cannot promise one that one Sumati marigold plant will produce 60,000 flowers.
