New azalea variety named after Belgian queen Mathilde

Queen Mathilde of Belgium will lend her name to a new, exclusive Ghent azalea variety at Floraliën Gent 2026, held on 30 April 2026 in Ghent, in the Flemish region of Belgium. The variety will be officially named and presented to the public during a dedicated ceremony at the event.

The ceremony marks a moment of recognition for one of the most iconic products of Flemish ornamental horticulture. The azalea has been associated with the Floraliën for more than a century, and the royal naming underlines its status as a symbol of craftsmanship and international appeal.

A top product of Flemish horticulture
The new variety, characterised by a striking white-pink flower with subtle gradations in colour, is the result of years of intensive breeding work. Behind a single plant lies a process of selection, crossing, and specialised expertise that typically spans more than ten years.

The Ghent azalea is today a global reference product and one of the strongest export varieties in Flemish ornamental horticulture. That this flower will carry the name of Queen Mathilde reinforces its standing as an ambassador for Belgian quality and creativity.

A moment of pride and distinction
The naming ceremony is expected to be one of the highlights of this edition of the Floraliën, bringing together a centuries-old event and a contemporary top-tier creation, a combination of tradition and innovation.

Joke Schauvliege, president of KMLP-Floraliën, underlined the significance of the moment: "The Ghent azalea is a source of pride for our region and our ornamental horticulture sector. The fact that this new variety may bear the name of Queen Mathilde gives that craftsmanship a special distinction. It is a powerful signal that our tradition is alive, continues to renew itself, and continues to shine internationally."

New public favourite
With its elegant colouring and abundant bloom, the new azalea has strong potential to become a favourite with the public. Floraliën Gent 2026 will mark its first public presentation.

Created by Drieghe Azalea from Lochristi
The variety was developed by Drieghe Azalea, a family business based in the East Flanders municipality of Lochristi. What began as a personal passion has grown into top-level expertise, with proprietary varieties now gaining international recognition. Developing a new azalea variety requires years of patience and specialised knowledge — sometimes more than a decade.
