During the day, the petunias look like normal white flowers, but once the sun sets, they illuminate a soft glow that feels like moonlight. A team of bioengineers at Light Bio, a company that creates and sells bioluminescent plants, created these flowers, known as firefly petunias.
They are available for viewing and purchase from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 2, and Sunday, May 3, at Market House, 210 W. Carleton Road in Hillsdale, Vice President of Raker-Roberta's Young Plants Susie Raker said, and other retailers are selling them across the state.
"Hands down, it's magical and mesmerizing," Raker said. "I can sit in a dark room with these plants for hours. It's just a really neat experience."
Raker-Roberta's is a young plant wholesaler in Litchfield. The 47-year-old business has sold millions of plants to commercial greenhouses, nurseries and landscapers across the United States and Canada.
