A Devon-based nursery is preparing to showcase its pollinator-friendly garden at the prestigious RHS Chelsea Flower Show for the first time in its 30-year history.
Gardeners Delight Nursery, a family-run operation in Barnstaple, will unveil a 6-metre by 4-metre containerised garden packed with up to 1,000 vibrant plants aimed at attracting butterflies, dragonflies, bees and other pollinators. Designed with smaller urban spaces in mind, the display will be featured in the Great Pavilion when the show opens to the press on Monday, May 19.
Created by husband-and-wife team Nick and Hannah Wade, the garden responds to one of the most frequent questions asked at their nursery: how to entice pollinators into compact outdoor areas. The design includes steel railings, bug huts to provide habitats for wildlife, a moon-gateway leading to a naturalised urban space, and a seating area integrated into the display.
Hannah Wade said: "Although the space is small, it's perfectly formed; bordered with steel railings, it contains everything you need in a floral display to entice pollinators. The design was initially inspired by the idea of fitting a smaller pollinator-friendly garden into a concrete yard or disused space. The railings in the design ask urban dwellers to consider planting perennials that attract bees and butterflies within the confines of their courtyard, balcony or garden."
