Research NRF: Flowers to be 2nd most popular gift

US: Record spending on flowers expected for Mother’s Day 2021

This year, Mother’s Day spending is expected to total a record 28.1 billion USD, up 1.4 billion USD from 2020, the annual survey released by the National Retail Federation reveals. This year, 83 percent of Americans plan to celebrate this holiday and even though most dollars are planned to be spent on jewelry, flowers will be the second planned gift, after gift cards, with an expected 20.85 USD spending per person - also the highest in the survey's history.

Flowers: 2nd most popular gift
This year, 83 percent of the 7,818 consumers surveyed is planning to celebrate Mother’s Day, of whom 68 percent is planning to buy flowers (+4 percent compared to 2020). The gift card is still the most important item with 72 percent of the people planning to buy them, but over the years this percentage is slowly decreasing. The percentage for flowers, however remained relatively stable over the years, ranging between 64 and 69 percent.

Records in total and personal spending on flowers
When looking at the total expected spending on flowers, it reached a record as it is expected that a total of 2.66 billion USD will be spent on flowers for the holiday this year (+0.1 billion USD). Also spending per person reached a record high; 20.85 USD, whereas it was 19.62 USD in 2020 and 20.31 USD in 2019. And most of the men are planning to buy flowers, 75 percent, whereas 61 percent of the women will by flowers.
