With the idea to show the world that Kenya flower growers are a professional group that takes care of their staff's welfare, trains them properly in the use of chemicals, and so on, the Naivasha Horticultural Fair was established in 2003. Over the years, this outdoor event has grown and is considered to be the largest horticultural fair in Africa, with 250+ exhibitors. This year, the 21st edition of the fair will take place on September 15 and 16.

Kenya is one of the largest horticultural countries in the world, and according to Chairman Richard McGonnell, the show is very international, with all important players, national and international, being present. "From greenhouse manufacturers, breeders, plastic producers, suppliers of chemicals, fertilizers supplier, solar, water, freight solutions suppliers as well as Corporate Social Responsibility," they are all there, he says. "And hopefully, this year, we shall attract more buyers to enjoy Naivasha and a few days in the Maasai Mara."
The Fair has always been held in a very casual manner. "One can mingle with friends that maybe they hadn't seen since the previous year and enjoy a glass or two of their favorite drinks or tea or coffee. And even more so after Covid, when we missed two years."
All the profits from Naivasha Horticultural Fair go to local causes, mostly based around the Woman Child, "We have actually built a whole secondary school, Nyamathi Secondary School, classrooms, Clinics, water harvesting, and our own, Naivasha Safe House, a rescue shelter for abused children."
