Juan Demian Requena, Continental Breeding on Hot Pink Mayra’s:

“After several years of making their way, garden roses are now in trend”

"The world changes and evolves, just like consumer preferences. In this constant motion, some unique roses were introduced a few years ago, known as 'Garden roses,' known for their special bloom. After several years of making their way, they are now in trend. And Hot Pink Mayra's® is one of these roses, belonging to the Mayra's Rose® family", says Juan Requena of Continental Breeding, the breeder of these roses. In this article, he tells us more about this family, and this rose in particular.

How it started
Continental Breeding has been investing in the breeding of the Mayra's rose since the introduction of the first varieties in South America in 2015. It started with the aim to breed a garden rose that has a better production and longer shelf life than the garden roses that were on the market at that time. So, creating a garden rose with the same characteristics as a standard rose. And they succeeded, and according to Requena, they achieved much more.

Hot Pink Mayra's
Over the years, they increased the number of colors in the range, creating a Mayra's family. Currently, the family consists of 8 colors. Hot Pink is one of their latest additions, and what makes this variety so special? Requena: "Among its various characteristics, what makes it special is firstly its bloom and, secondly, its color. It aligns with Pantone's choice for color of the year 2023, 'Viva Magenta' – a vivid and intensely powerful color as the name suggests and, at the same time, sophisticated, making it a distinct flower."

High productivity
According to Requena, the productivity of Hot Pink Mayra's is high for a rose of its characteristics. "They produce 130 flowers/m² in soil and 169 flowers/m² in hydroponics." On top of that, it has a strong phytosanitary resistance and vibrant hue.

Availability
The Viva Magenta, the color of their Hot Pink Mayra's, has been and will continue to be present throughout the year as several farms are growing it. "First, Flores La Mana from GHT and now Elite Flower in Colombia, along with other major companies in Ecuador, have this wonderful variety in their assortment."
