Cambridge Festival 2021

The CambPlants was team pleased to support the University’s Plant community by facilitating their participation in the Cambridge Festival. The team promoted many plant-related events and supported events from the Department of Plant Sciences, the Botanic Garden and the University Herbarium.

Herbarium Curator Dr. Lauren Gardiner designed and hosted four well-attended events. 300 Years and a Million Dead Plants: University Herbarium Virtual Tour was a virtual behind-the-scenes tour of one of Cambridge’s least known collections, a treasure trove of over a million preserved plant specimens collected from all over the world over more than 300 years. University Herbarium Hack: How To Workshop was an explanatory workshop for participants of the University Herbarium hack: Help us unlock our collections - from the comfort of your home! event, an interactive specimen transcription citizen science project led by Dr. Gardiner. Botany in 18th century Cambridge: A first look inside the Martyn Collection, with Dr. Gardiner and Dr. Edwin Rose, was a talk and a first viewing of some of the treasures in the Martyn collections held in Cambridge University Library and Cambridge University Herbarium.
