FlowerTrials is done for another year, but planning for next year is already underway for Westhoff. For those at the Mothership facility in Sudlohn, Germany, for this event, there were many familiar faces from North America and beyond.
For those who are not familiar with FlowerTrials, it is a trade event that is more similar to the California Spring Trials than to traditional trade show events, like Cultivate. With so many breeding companies headquartered in the Netherlands and Germany, all being relatively close together in the NW corner of Europe, it is was a natural progression to have as many of these companies to open their doors to growers from all over the world. Not only see the newest genetics, but to get to know the companies behind the breeding, too. And since there are dozens of breeding companies, representing bedding plants, perennials, shrubs, flowering tropicals, and everything in between, it makes for a very productive trip, but a very busy week.
Westhoff has been opening their doors almost as long as they have had a breeding program and welcomed visitors to a show that focused not only on the company's newest breeding, but also providing a chance to see their 45 acres finished of production, too.
Lucy
Black & White all over
This year's theme was Black and White. Not only a stunning Crazytunia variety, but it is a reminder to keep it simple. Even Westhoff's own in-house doggie-diva, Lucy, was on theme.
In keeping with the theme of simplicity, Westhoff featured its collaboration with HilverdaFlorist in a stripped down, color matching concept in-line with its two-plant combo program EZ Mix. Utilizing the HF Salgoon Salvia and Garvinea Sweet varieties for a bold vertical element, and some of Westhoff's newest and brightest Calibrachoa to pair or contrast, these mixes go beyond individual breeding company barriers and focus on the best of what the companies have to offer to deliver a clean, simple combo program that looks good in the garden Center, on racks at a grocery store, or on the catwalk.
Combining Salgoon Salvia, Chameleon and Candy Shop Calibrachoa varieties makes sense not only aesthetically, but they are also produced at the same unrooted farms. And Garvinea Sweet varieties paired with some of Westhoff's best Caliloco Calibrachoa gives incredible impact.
It would be impossible to have a plant display from Westhoff without Crazytunias. Not only is it one of the most recognizable plant brands in the world, but there are so many different varieties that they just sort of pop up everywhere.
Westhoff had a "small" selection of the 50+ varieties available today, but with a focus on the most recently introduced. This year's introductions, Yello, Inkblot, Blackberry Syrup, and Bananarama front and center in the display.
Calibrachoa Caliloco Graffiti put on quite a show for attendees. With its highly variable "consistently inconsistent" color pattern, it was impossible to ignore. Admittedly, the giant banners helped, as well as being featured on the cover of this year's Big Book of Color catalog.
Westhoff's partnership with Rieger was also on display with the entire Westhoff assortment of Beaugonia and Shine Bright series of Begonias. Several of Rieger's namesake varieties were also on display to highlight the partnership and their global shipping focus.
And finally, the cutest plant in the most adorable pots, the new Muffin series of Verbena features plants that are naturally more compact, nearly eliminating the need for chemical growth control in these little crenelated pots to really complete the muffin-look.
