Strong Sant Jordi rose sales, with 7 million stems expected

At Mercabarna-flor, Mercabarna president and deputy mayor for Social Rights, Economic Promotion and Labour, Feminisms and Democratic Memory, Raquel Gil, together with Miquel Batlle, president of the Association of Wholesale Companies of Mercabarna-flor (AEM), presented this year's rose sales outlook for Sant Jordi.

Raquel Gil said that "forecasts indicate this Sant Jordi will be the best in history in terms of the number of citizens filling the streets of towns and cities across Catalonia, if the weather holds."

The president of Mercabarna based that view on the fact that "the celebration falls during the working week and further away from Easter than in other years, meaning most Catalans will remain in the cities, where activities are concentrated."

Positive Sant Jordi expected, without surpassing 2025 sales
On rose sales, Raquel Gil explained that alongside those calendar factors, several established consumption patterns also point to a positive trading day for the flower sector. Individual buyers often purchase more than one rose, either as a gift or simply to decorate the home, while companies, associations, hospitality businesses and retailers buy roses to give to employees and customers, as well as to decorate their premises.

The flower sector expects around 7,000,000 roses to be marketed, matching last year's figure, and does not expect sales to exceed that level despite higher participation in the celebration, because the general rise in prices, "mainly as a consequence of international conflicts and climate change, is affecting citizens' pockets."

Sant Jordi remains one of the most important dates for the Catalan floral sector, with 30% of all roses sold annually in Catalonia marketed on that single day.

Trends: felt, raffia, burlap, kraft paper and cardboard wrapping
Rosa Valls, director of the Mercabarna-flor floral art school, gave a live rose decoration demonstration to present the latest trends for this year's Sant Jordi campaign.

Valls explained that florists are consolidating the use of natural, sustainable and environmentally respectful materials, alongside the near elimination of plastic or the use of biodegradable plastics for wrapping roses.

"Along these lines," she said, "felt fabrics, raffia, burlap, kraft paper and cardboard stand out, as well as raffia ribbons, cotton or jute threads, and wooden or cardboard ornaments."
