Anton van Duijn, AvD Boeketservice:

NL: "We produce around 600 bouquets a day for Mother's Day"

"It's a madhouse with Mother's Day around the corner," says Anton van Duijn of AvD Boeketservice. His company assists florists in creating bouquets, and demand is particularly high in the weeks leading up to Mother's Day.

"Since we started, we have been experiencing strong growth. It's incredibly rewarding to serve many customers while maintaining high quality," Anton shares. "With our small team of freelancers, we now create about 600 bouquets a day, primarily for large florists. This week, we're easily delivering 100 bouquets per customer, sometimes even more."

Mothers love roses
He initially expected demand to start late, similar to what happened with Secretary's Day, which made planning challenging. However, florists have been preparing for Mother's Day well in advance, and fortunately, the demand arrived on time. "This is a relief because making 1,500 bouquets all at once is just not feasible," he explains. "I also call many customers to ask about their needs, and they share their preferences with me."

Anton incorporates a lot of pink and red in his bouquets, along with what he refers to as "dotty flowers." "We like to use larger, round flowers, such as peonies and roses. In every bouquet I make, there is at least one rose, but for Mother's Day, there are certainly three. I've always learned that mothers love roses," he explains. The bouquets are crafted to be more loving, though not necessarily classic. Pick bouquets with less variation in height and depth are also popular choices.

100% organically grown flowers
Last week, AvD Boeketservice launched its own organic line. "We initially planned to do this after Mother's Day, but we decided to launch it earlier. We're thrilled with this decision because the demand for organically grown flowers is high. Many mothers are conscious about the flowers they purchase, so it fits perfectly with our concept," Anton explains. "Last Monday, we made 40 bunches that sold out within six minutes. Additionally, we can create an organic bouquet using 100% organically grown flowers from Dutch soil and offer it at the same price as a 'regular' bouquet. People often think organic flowers are expensive, but that's not true at all. An organic flower costs the same as a regular one, or even less during the summer."

Anton is fully committed to his organic bouquets. "We're currently in a season where there isn't much color yet. In the fall, there will be more vibrant colors with flowers like sunflowers and Rudbeckias. Right now, everything is still fresh and green, but that's part of the seasonal charm. That's the beauty of organic flowers: everything changes with the months and the seasonal colors," he explains.
