Andalusia's cut flower sector blooms ahead of Mother's Day

With Mother's Day falling on the first Sunday of May, the cut flower sector enters one of its busiest sales periods of the year. Flower growing has a long-established tradition in Andalusia, where the 2024–2025 season saw more than one thousand hectares in production, 587 hectares dedicated to cut flowers and 524 hectares to ornamental plants.

Within the cut flower segment, the province of Cádiz stands out, accounting for nearly 60% of the total area, followed by Huelva (16%) and Seville (14%). In the ornamental plant segment, Almería leads with 56% of the regional total, with Málaga in second place at 18% of the hectarage.

In terms of output, the Andalusian region produced approximately 538.2 million flowers in the most recent season, along with more than 40.3 million ornamental plants. On the commercial side, cut flower sales from the region generated around €104 million in 2024, while ornamental plant sales came in at approximately €162 million in the same year.

Carnations
Carnations are the most representative crop in Andalusia's cut flower sector. The latest official figures show that carnations accounted for more than 40% of the total cut flower growing area across Andalusia in the 2022–2023 season. By province, Cádiz led the regional ranking with 65% of the area under carnation cultivation, followed by Seville (31%).

Total carnation production in Andalusia in 2022–2023 exceeded 294 million stems, representing more than half of all cut flowers produced in the region that season (nearly 571.4 million stems). Cádiz accounted for the largest share of output (69% of the Andalusian total), followed by Seville (27%).

Consolación Vera, Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development, held a working meeting with representatives of Seville's cut flower sector.
On the export side, more than 41.7 million carnations were exported from Andalusia in 2023–2024, generating close to five million euros for the region. The Netherlands was the primary destination, taking 72% of those exports, while the United Kingdom received a significant share as well, at 15%.
