US: Mother’s Day spending expected to hit record $38 billion

Hello Flowers has been a florist in Rupert, Idaho for more than 30 years. With Mother's Day around the corner, spending is expected to hit a record $38 billion this year, according to the National Retail Federation.

Flowers are typically the number one gift, as 75 percent of shoppers plan to purchase a floral arrangement. Esther Garner, the owner, has been managing the shop for the last eight years. However, she says the shop doesn't just sell flowers.

"We're the largest provider of houseplants in this area and then we also do a lot of fun events and classes, too. We have a local butterfly release class coming up, where we go out and release butterflies and pollinators into the park. I do painting classes, you name it," Garner said. Garner said it's a generational industry, as she gets to follow her customers on different walks of life.

"I get to do people's weddings. But then I follow them alongside their funerals at their most loved ones. But then I also get to reach out to the community. Like, I just spoke at Minico High School and got to teach their floral department and inspire younger kids to reach out and be creative," Garner said.
