Mexico: Heavy rains could drive up marigold prices in Puebla ahead of Día de Muertos

In Puebla, the price of marigolds for 2025 could rise after rains damaged up to 33 percent of crops in the Huejotzingo Valley, one of the region's main production areas. Growers expect that by the Día de Muertos, the cost of this flower could double, affecting both vendors and consumers.

The recent rains impacted roughly 50 hectares of the 150 planted across municipalities including Huejotzingo, San Salvador El Verde, Nealtican, and San Martín Texmelucan. In Huejotzingo alone, 30 hectares were damaged, putting the livelihoods of more than 1,500 families at risk.

Florists estimate that the price of a traditional roll of marigolds, usually 100 pesos, could rise to 150 or even 200 pesos depending on availability at the end of October.

Despite the losses, total production is still expected to reach 745,000 rolls of marigolds, generating between 37.5 and 50 million pesos from field-grown flowers, 4 million from greenhouse marigolds, and 10 million from potted plants, for a combined total of 51.5 million pesos.
