Balearic peony chosen to represent Spain in EUROMED 2025 stamp contest

The Balearic peony, scientifically known as Paeonia cambessedesii, is the endemic flower of the Balearic Islands and will represent Spain in the EUROMED 2025 stamp competition, organized by the Union for the Mediterranean Postal Services (PUMed). The annual event allows member countries to submit designs aligned with the theme chosen by the association. This year's theme is Natural Resources of the Mediterranean. Spain's postal service, Correos, selected the Balearic peony for the series.

Voting for the best stamp in the EUROMED 2025 series is open to anyone until November 15, via the official website: https://euromed-postal.org/voting/.

On July 8, Correos released a series of ninety thousand stamps and three thousand Premium Sheets dedicated to the species, priced at 3 euros each. The design features an illustration of the flower, its stem, and the leaves of this Mallorcan endemic plant.

Paeonia cambessedesii is a perennial plant in the Paeoniaceae family, named after the French botanist Jacques Cambessèdes. It grows 45 to 60 centimeters tall, with striking pink flowers. Its stems are shades of red-purple, and fully developed leaves show bluish-green tones. The lower leaves are biternate with up to nine segments.

Correos also produced first-day covers featuring the stamp illustration and a first-day cancellation.
